This is my recommendation for the best places to start if you are new to Buddhism and interested in practicing.
A brief overview of the prescribed course of action. Ultimately your path is your own.

- What is Buddhism? – Understanding The Buddha and his overall teaching.
- Gradual Training – A simple step by step path to start practicing. Focusing on virtue and understanding
- Best Starter Books: A simple list of a few books that might be able to help you learn more
- Scripture: Start reading The Buddha’s actual words and suttas. I recommend the Dhammapada and Middle Length Discourses.
- Meditation: Start developing a meditation practice. Try to start easy – 15 mins a day (morning and night)
- Try to observe Uposotha days (days of observance) and take The Eight Precepts if you can.
- Take refuge in The Triple Gem – The Buddha, The Dhamma, The Sangha
- Ultimately the best way to learn is to visit a local Buddhist Center or Monastery. Don’t worry so much if its Zen, Tibetan or Theravadan. Any exposure can help cultivate your wisdom and progress you.
- Connect with others on some great online communities.
I recommend putting emphasis on The Five Precepts as you begin they are a great foundation for anyone. If everyone followed just those five the world would be a much better place. Hope this helps.
